New record for Bridgnorth Golf Club

Bridgnorth Golf Club have given support to the Shropshire & Herfordshire Union of Golf Clubs (SHUGC) since it was formed in 1956. Over the years, four of the club’s members have been recognised for their contribution to the SHUGC by being asked to be its President. It is a four year commitment, wit two as President-Elect followed by two in the main post.

The 2023-24 SHUGC President is Bridgnorth’s Charles Sievewright, who has dedicated a lot of time and effort to the union. This includes 12 years as County Junior Organiser, responsible for all junior competitions, (inter-club, championships, fixtures against other counties, Midland Golf events and England Golf), for under-14s,under-16s and under-18’s. He has also overseen the Peewee Tour for younger players. He has organised the Four Counties Tournament on four occasions over a period of 13 years and worked alongside Shropshire Ladies Junior Organiser and regional England Golf representatives. Prior to that Charles served on the County Junior Committee for 10 years under the then County Junior Organiser Ron Snelling.
All in all Charles has been connected with Junior Golf at county and club level for 37 years!

As SHUGC 2023-24 President, Charles duties are to

  • Attend and support Men’s, Seniors and Juniors competitions and county matches.
  • Chair administrative and executive meetings throughout the year.
  • Host the Presidents of this year’s annual Four Counties Tournament.
  • Take part in presentations at all county competitions and championships.
  • Represent Shropshire & Herefordshire at other county functions and England Golf events.

The SHUGC 2023-24 President Elect is Nigel Chesters, past captain of Hawkstone Park, and  a county senior player.

When Roger Elston took office as SHUGC President in 2011, Bridgnorth Golf Club claimed a record of having three living SHUGC presidents as members, never expecting this record to be equalled. However, with Michael Cooksey only a month away from his 93rd Birthday, they have now beaten their own record by now having four living SHUGC Presidents as members!
