Plans for Hospital Improvements

Editor Sally Themans met with Brian Mayhew-Smith, Chairman of the Hospital League of Friends, Mike Rainsford of the Civic Society and Hospital Manager Rachael Mole to find out about the work that’s been going on to improve the hospital exteriors, to hear of plans going forward, and find out how local people can get involved.

We all know how very lucky we are to have such fantastic medical facilities in Bridgnorth, and thanks to a generous legacy made by former Bridgnorth lady, Mrs Christine Holder, the Civic Society has been working closely with the League of Friends to finish off some of the landscaping to improve the experience for patients, staff and visitors to the hospital.

The first stage of the project to be completed has involved planting two internal courtyards to provide sheltered seating for patients and visitors. The courtyards have been planted with variegated shrubs and divided into separate areas, using timber pergolas.

Through careful planting, bird and insect life has been encouraged as has the sound of running water through a small bubble-pool fountain.

It is now hoped that people will step forward and help fund benches, wooden tables and chairs to be positioned within the courtyard. The society has financed the planting and construction work but any help towards additional seating would be greatly appreciated.”

The next phases in the pipeline are the planting of a beech hedge, improvements to the area at the front of the Doctors Surgery, tree planting in the wasteland by the pharmacy and much needed tidying up of the border between the hospital and the relief road.

If anyone can help with the planned seating they are asked to call Brian Mayhew-Smith of the League of Friends on (01746) 769567.
