A dental practice at the heart of Much Wenlock has continued to move in the right direction, despite the tough challenges posed by the pandemic.

Mihail and Roxana, Doctors, , owners and principal practitioners at Twickel Dental Practice, have gradually expanded their team with people who share their passion for oral health.

The couple, who have 35 years’ experience between them, took over the long-established practice in 2018 and have risen to the many challenges of Covid-related restrictions to keep Twickel moving forward.

Mihail and Roxana both practice general dentistry and Roxana is also in charge of facial aesthetics, a recent addition at Twickel.

It is an example of the couple’s desire to widen the practice’s range of expertise, as also illustrated by the addition of Dr Chris Povey to the team. Chris, who graduated with a BDS from the University of Sheffield in 2013 and has a postgraduate (PG) certificate in Endodontics, has built up his skillset with further PG training, enabling him to offer a full range of treatment options to patients.

“New patients are always welcome at the practice, and the calm, relaxed atmosphere and friendly, knowledgeable staff take the pressure off what can be a challenging experience for some.”

He has a particular interest in Root Canal Treatment, explaining, “Teeth are a bit like icebergs, in that the roots are twice as long underneath the gum as they are on top and inside these roots are hollow tubes or canals where the nerve tissue lives.”

Chris works to treat infections in the root with the aim of saving the tooth for the long term.

He also has a keen interest in Restorative dentistry – putting fractured or decayed teeth back-together to restore smiles.

The team continues to expand, with a new general dentist due to join shortly, bringing a special interest in restorative dentistry.

Familiar faces are still there, of course, including Associate Dentist Dr Sandeep Kooner, who qualified at The University of Birmingham in 2013 after which he provided Private and NHS general dental care at several practices in the West Midlands before joining Twickel in 2018.

Dental Nurse Denise

He has a passion for all aspects of dentistry but particularly enjoys restoring teeth and treating children.

The team also comprises hygienist therapist Lydia Lewis Dip QH RCS, Dip DT; dental nurses Denise, Carys and Olivia (nurse in training), Practice Manager Rachel and receptionists Evie and Angela.

Twickel is a community-focused practice and the client-centred approach is backed up by a commitment to cutting-edge technology.

Mihail explains, “As a practice, we keep up to date with everything that’s happening in the world of dentistry, gum health and orthodontics. We invest in the latest technology and we have an ongoing training regime that means every dentist and nurse is abreast of new developments in our field.

“Clients feel relaxed and at home and we offer a wide range of plans including NHS, private and Denplan options.”

New patients are always welcome at the practice, and the calm, relaxed atmosphere and friendly, knowledgeable staff take the pressure off what can be a challenging experience for some.

Waiting room

The setting too has its own unique character – parts of Twickel House date back to the 14th century and the beautiful building has been lovingly and sympathetically restored. The spectacular first-floor waiting room features the exposed original crook frame of this historical house, which was extended in the early 18th century, and medieval fittings sit cheek-by-jowl with some of the world’s most advanced dental equipment.
