Putting to pensions

Bridgnorth’s Callum Brown has completed an unusual career switch – from professional golfer to qualified financial adviser.

Callum has been awarded his Diploma in Financial Advice (DipFA) by the London Institute of Banking and Finance (LIBF). The 25-year-old is part of the team at one of Shropshire’s leading financial advice firms, John Cannaby Associates (JCA) Ltd, of Bridgnorth.

Callum completed an intensive study programme with Quilter Financial Adviser School, and has also qualified as a Mortgage Adviser (CeMap).

JCA gave Callum Brown his chance of a career in the financial services industry

JCA sponsored Callum through his studies, during which time he worked for the firm as a financial planning assistant.

Callum has lived in Bridgnorth all his life and been a member of the town’s golf club for 15 years. He has been club champion three times, county champion and junior county captain.

He turned professional at 20, with dreams of playing on the PGA and European tours.

“It was difficult to access the industry as I had not had the relevant experience. But John Cannaby Associates gave me a chance.”

“I have played out in America and have been fortunate enough to travel the world playing golf, meeting all sorts of people. I played golf professionally for around three years but the intense competition and the financing of such a dream meant that I began to fall out of love with the game,” Callum explains.

“I made the decision to move away from golf as a career and focus more on securing a career path in the industry of finance. I was always interested in investing and have been managing my own investment portfolio since the age of 18. After I finished playing golf, I looked at becoming a financial adviser because I thought that it would be great to help people with their finances.

“It was difficult to access the industry as I had not had the relevant experience. But John Cannaby Associates gave me a chance.”

He joins JCA colleagues Paul Taylor and Shane Lunnon in supporting families in the region with investments, pensions and protection advice.

Callum adds, “I am looking forward to beginning my career as a financial adviser. My main goal will be to provide clients with specialist advice to help protect and grow their wealth with bespoke plans that are tailored to their individual needs.”
