Ironbridge in the spotlight and in ribbons

ironbridge lit up

Ironbridge was lit up to spectacular effect on Thursday 1 October as part of UNESCO’s Night of Heritage Light.

And the iron bridge played a starring role in another artistic endeavour in October, when it was covered with hundreds of colourful rags as part of an installation called Weighty Friend, led by artist in residence Faye Claridge.

Ironbridge ribbons 1Fifty volunteers came along to help drape the iconic structure in fabric on Saturday 10 October, taking only an hour to complete the project. The finished piece remained for a few minutes as a spectacle for visitors and photographers to record.

The aim of Weighty Friend was to recognise the contribution of the Darby Family and their workforce in starting the Industrial Revolution in Coalbrookdale; the hotter colours referenced the furnace and the stereotypically feminine hues were chosen to represent the role of women in the Industrial Revolution.
