Four Bridgnorth Guides have been taking part in a variety of activities to achieve the highest award a Guide can earn: the Baden Powell Challenge Award. To earn the award, the girls have tried out many activities over the past 18 months including doing the Up the Steps Challenge, making a weekend visit to London to visit Parliament, and taking part in six months’ community service as Young Leaders helping with Rainbows and Brownies. The award was presented by county commissioner Clare Shinton.
The Guides also took part in a gruelling fundraiser earlier this year. On a cold and windy evening in February, 45 Guides from the Bridgnorth area and their leaders experienced a sleepout with a difference. In William Brookes School car park, the girls built shelters from cardboard and waterproofed them with plastic and groundsheets. They slept in their boxes until morning… despite Storm Eric blowing winds of up to 50 miles an hour through the night.
The idea was to raise awareness of homelessness by supporting the charity Telford STAY, and a donation of £150 was made. The Guides also collected warm clothing for people who are homeless and women’s refuges in Wolverhampton.
