Hedgehog awareness

Hedgehog numbers are rapidly in decline and many populations are really struggling due to habitat destruction, loss of food supplies and severe weather.

Over the last few weeks, hedgehogs have been emerging from their winter hibernation and starting to become active in the countryside and in our gardens. You may already be aware of their presence, but are you aware of their needs? With fat reserves running low, they will need food but not bread and milk as previously thought. A plate of canned cat or dog food or cat biscuits is much better for them.
Be careful when you do get the lawnmower and strimmer out; check first for any little spiky friends and herd them to other parts of the garden before you flick that power switch and, where possible, avoid pesticides and slug pellets.

If you need help, contact the British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890801.
