Visiting the Pheasant in Broseley for a family Sunday lunch, we were delighted to find the place busy and welcoming. What struck us immediately was the decor – classic pub styling with a funky twist, giving it a contemporary, ‘buzzy’ feel. We could tell from the vibrant, happy atmosphere that we were in for a treat.
Our generously portioned starters included Thai fish cakes, sumptuous ham hock terrine, plump whitebait and piping hot sweet potato and chilli soup, all beautifully presented with that unmistakable homemade hallmark, and tasting as fresh and good as they looked.
For our main course, three of us opted for roasts, as part of the Sunday lunch deal which offers a course for £8.90, two for £12.95 or three for £15.50. They were flawless. Perfectly cooked pork with tooth-tingling crackling, chicken with all the trimmings, and a hunk of roast beef accompanied by an array of vegetables and roasties good enough to give my mum’s a run for the money. My son had the beef and Guinness pie with a crisp pastry top and rich, unctuous filling.
Although full, we just couldn’t resist the sound of the dessert menu so rounded off the meal with fantastic puds such as sticky toffee and chocolate torte and coffees. There was also the option of a cheese board.
Beers on offer went down well, with three local beers putting in appearances at the bar: Hobson’s Twisted Spire, Holden’s Golden Glow and Wood’s Shropshire Lad. The wine list was well selected and reasonable; from a Chenin Blanc at £13.95 to a Mendoza Malbec at £17.95.
New proprietors Libby and Brent have worked hard to get their service offer right and we appreciated the attentive and friendly waiting staff. The pub also offers functions and parties, and the exposed stonework, wooden beams, timber flooring and opulent chandeliers certainly provide a dramatic and elegant backdrop.
Fortunate Broseley residents now don’t have to travel far for a pub with a great modern feel to it, along with a super wine list and quality home-cooked food.
